Recidive nasopharyngeal cancer is a malignancy that often grows back after
being removed or given radiation, due to the presence of tumor cells that are
left behind, then grow larger in the same area. Brachytherapy plays an
important role in the treatment of nasopharyngeal cancer by bringing the
radioactive source closer to the primary tumor by paying attention to the
surrounding healthy organs. With the advancement of technology in the field of
radiotherapy, nasopharyngeal brachytherapy examination is rarely used and
radiotherapy with the technique is used more often Intensity Modulated
Radiotherapy (IMRT). The research was conducted at the Radiotherapy Unit,
Dr. Kariadi Semarang, aims to determine the technique of brachytherapy in
resident nasopharyngeal cancer and explain the role of brachytherapy in
resident nasopharyngeal cancer.
The type of research is descriptive qualitative with a case study approach,
data collection is carried out at the Radiotherapy Unit, Dr. Kariadi Semarang.
Collecting data by direct observation, in-depth interviews and documentation.
Data analysis with four stages, namely data collection, data reduction, data
presentation and drawing conclusions.
The results of the research on the management of the role of brachytherapy
in resident nasopharyngeal cancer at the Radiotherapy Unit of Dr. RSUP.
Kariadi Semarang, covering the stages of consultation and examination by a
radiation oncologist, general condition examination, antigen/PCR swab, patient
preparation, complete laboratory, installation of a nasopharyngeal applicator, xray c-arm AP lateral cranium. TPS is determined by the point of tumor tissue
and normal tissue, namely the nasopharynx gets a 100% dose and healthy
tissue gets a maximum dose of 60% of the 30 Gy dose obtained, a dose of 5 x
6Gy per fraction is given twice a day, 3Gy in the morning 3Gy at 6-hour
intervals with Cobalt-source. 60. The reason for using brachytherapy techniques
for resident nasopharyngeal cancer at the Radiotherapy Unit, Dr. Kariadi is to
give a homogeneous dose to the target tumor and minimize the dose received
by the organ at risk.
