Dental caries is a common dental and oral disease found in the community. Saliva is one of the factors that can cause caries. Lengkuas and Akar Wangi is a plant that efficacious cure. This plant has the essential oil content. The essential oil content has antibacterial properties that can affect in salivary pH when Lengkuas and Akar Wangi warter is used for gargling.
The type of this research is quantitative descriptive with research method of quasi experiment. The design of this study used two groups of subjects with initial observation (pretest) and final observation (posttest). The samples in this study are Bakti Husada boarding students as much as 32 respondents, data analysis used is descriptive quantitative and samples that taken by using simple random sampling technique method by way of lottery technique.
The results showed that there was a difference in salivary pH before and after gargling with Lengkuas and Akar Wangi water. Before gargling with Lengkuas water, it showed that the average of salivary pH is 6.7 and after gargling, it showed that average of salivary pH is 7.1 with difference of 0,4. And before gargling with Akar Wangi water the average of salivary pH is 6,7, after gargling, the average of salivary pH is 7.2 with a difference of 0.5. From the result of this research, it can be concluded that gargling water of Lengkuas and Akar Wangi can increase the salivary pH in oral cavity towards neutral and alkaline, so it can be suggested to use Lengkuas and Akar Wangi water as alternative gargle.
