Background: High blood pressure during adolescence can lead to hypertension in adulthood and is considered a major cause of various cardiovascular diseases. The publication of The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 2015 shows 10% of children aged 8-17 years have prehypertension and hypertension. Based on the 2013 Riset Kesehatan Dasar (RISKESDAS), cases of hypertension in Indonesia in the 15-17 age group amounted to 5.3%. The causes of hypertension in adolescents can be divided into factors that can be changed and factors that cannot be changed. Factors that can be changed include diet, including consumption of sources of sodium, vegetables and fruit, and fat.
Objective: To review the relationship between sodium intake, vegetable and fruit intake, and fat intake with hypertension in adolescents.
Method: The method used in the literature review is collecting literature from original research aricle. Literature searches were carried out online databases namely Pubmed, Elsevier (SCOPUS), and Google Scholar published from 2015 to 2020 in Indonsian and English. The articles obtained through search engine were article with observational designon a sample of adolescents aged 11-19 years. The final search results obtained 8 research articles.
Results:The intake of sodium salt and fat, respectively 5-21 grams per day and 54.7 - 138.2 grams per day, can increase blood pressure in adolescents. While the intake of vegetables and fruit, respectively ≥600 grams and 120 - 380 grams per day can reduce blood pressure in adolescents.
Conclusion: Sodium intake, vegetable and fruit intake, and fat intake that are not in accordance with daily recommendations can increase blood pressure in adolescents.
