Dentist Expert System Software in Dental Caries Detection

Background: Dentist’s knowledge can be poured into dental caries detection software. Patients with dental caries
can fill their complaints of dental caries by themselves with the help of caries detection software. The aim
of this study was to determine the validity of expert system software in dental caries detection. Method: This
research was a quantitative description of cross-sectional approach. Subjects were 150 patients of dental caries
whom diagnosed as email caries, dentinal caries, pulp hyperemia, pulpitis, pulp necrose, and pulp gangrene
with polyp. Expert system software in this study was a result of software design which has been tested by
validation of technology, operation, and law. The validity test of the software system was done by calculating
the ratio between the amounts of accurate data with the amount of tested data multiplied by 100%. Results:
Validity test for email caries detection software resulted in 96.3% with good criteria. Validity test for diagnosing
the dentinal caries, pulp hyperemia resulted in 100%. Validity test for diagnosing the pulp necrose showed
89.5% with good criteria. Validity test for diagnosing the pulpitis showed 60% with good criteria. Validity test
for diagnosing the pulp gangrene with polyp showed 25% with low criteria. Conclusion: It was concluded that
the validity of caries detection software was 89%. With this expert system software, earlier diagnosis can be
established and continued to the examination by dentists for the next treatment.
