Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) lumbar T2WI sagittal view often arise ghosting artifacts, these artifacts affect the anatomical information, so efforts should be made to minimize the visualization of ghosting artifacts by choosing the right phase encoding direction. In the sagittal view can be selected phase anterior-posterior and superior-inferior direction encoding. The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in anatomical information and ghosting artifacts MRI lumbar T2WI sagittal view between the anterior-posterior and superior-inferior positioning of the phase encoding direction, as well as knowing better phase encoding directions in visualizing anatomical information and minimum ghosting artifacts on the T2WI lumbar MRI sagittal view.
Methods: The type of this research is quantitative research with experimental approach. The data was collected at Instalasi Radiologi RS Bethesda Yogyakarta by using questionnaire to three respondents. Data analysis was performed statistically by using SPSS 23 software, Wilcoxon test to know the difference level of anatomical information and ghosting artifacts between the anterior-posterior and superior-inferior phase encoding direction, and the mean rank value of Wilcoxon test to know the visualization of better anatomical information and minimum ghosting artifacts from both phase encoding directions.
Results: From the statistical test results it is known that there is a difference of anatomical information and ghosting artifacts between the phase encoding direction anterior-posterior and superior-inferior with p-value 0.000 for anatomical information, and 0.008 (p 0.05) among others the vertebral corpus (0.157), intervertebral disc (0.83), and HNP (1.000). The result of better direction encoding in visualizing the anatomical information of the sagittal lumbar view is by the superior-inferior phase encoding direction indicated by a higher mean rank value (7.00) than the anterior-posterior (0.00). For visualization of minimum ghosting artifacts is indicated by the lowest mean rank value in the superior-inferior (0.00), compared to the anterior-posterior (4.00).
Conclusion: Based on these results indicate that good anatomical information and minimum ghosting artifacts are shown in the use of superior-inferior phase encoding directions.
